What is am Excel Worksheet

A worksheet is a single page in excel and a collection of cells where you keep your data and work with that information or data. By default each new created excel sheet contains only one worksheet. Name Sheet 1.

You can add as much sheets as you want in your excel workbook by clicking on + button on right side of existing sheets. Creating multiple worksheets while working on large amount of data will help you manage your workbook and find your data easily. You can also create groups of worksheets to quickly add data or information to multiple worksheets at the same time.

How to rename a worksheet

You can rename any worksheet by your desired name. When you create a new excel file that contains by default one worksheet name Sheet1, but you can rename that sheet to identify sheets among many sheets by following steps below.

  1. Right click on that sheet you want to rename and a menu will appear.

  3. Then click Rename and that sheet’s name will become editable. You can write any name you want to give that sheet. I am giving this sheet name “mySheet1” but you can give it a name whatever you want.

How to insert a new worksheet

You can insert as much sheets as you want in your worksheet. If you want to insert a new worksheet to your Work book you just have to follow steps below.
  1. Click on + button on right side of current existing sheets

  3. When you click on that + button a new sheet will be created as shown below, new generated sheet automatically will be named as Sheet2. You can rename it also with your desired name.

You can also change the default number of sheets when a new workbook is created by following steps below.

  1. Go to File > and Click options

  3. A Window will be Appear containing many options, now what you have to do is change number of sheets from option include this many sheets as shown below.

How to delete a worksheet

If you don’t want a sheet and it is useless for you can delete that sheet from current existing sheets by following steps below.

  1. Right Click on that sheet you want to delete, a menu will appear then click on Delete

  3. The sheet you want to delete has been deleted

If you don’t want any sheets to be edited or deleted then there is a way to protect your desired sheets so that no one can delete or edit those sheets. Follow steps below.

  1. Right click on sheet you want to protect from being edited or deleted a menu will appear then click on protect sheet and your sheet will be protected.

How to copy a worksheet

You can make copy of your desired worksheet and its content excel allow you to do that, you just have to follow few steps below.

  1. Right click on desired worksheet you want to copy, a menu will appear then click on Move or Copy.

  3. After clicking on Move or Copy a small window named Move or Copy will appear with some options. Now choose where the copy of sheets will appear from Before sheet: field, you can choose from all given option but we in this example we will choose move to end to place the copy of sheets right next to current existing sheets.

  4. The one thing you must have to do is check the checkbox next to Create a copy and then click OK.

  6. The Sheet you wanted to copy is now copied, the name of new copy is same as original sheet but it contains a version number (2) with it. In our Example we copied mySheet1 and new copy of this sheet is mySheet1 (2) and data is also the same as original sheet.

You can also copy any worksheet to entirely new workbook which you want.

  1. Right Click on any sheet you want to copy then a Move or Copy, the above shown window will appear, now you just have to do is to select a work book from list of existing workbooks and checkbox must be checked again and click OK.

  3. Your desired sheet will be copied to other workbook you want. You are done.

How to Move a worksheet

If you want to move worksheet from its current position, you just have to do simply one thing.

  1. Just Click and hold on sheet you want to move and drag it to position you want to move on.

  3. we have Moved mySheet4 after mySheet1. After moving sheet our new position will be.

How to change the color of worksheet

You can change your sheets in different colors to easily differentiate between sheets. To change the color of any sheet you want you just have to follow steps below.

  1. Right click on sheet you want to change the color, you will see a menu and click or hover on Tab Color and then a sub menu with a color swatch.

  3. Now just hover on any color and it will show you a preview of color on selected worksheet.

  5. Now to select any color for your selected worksheet, just click on that color and that color will be applied to that worksheet.

    You will notice that color of that selected worksheet is less noticeable. But when you click on another worksheet color of previous Worksheet will be more noticeable.

    Grouping and ungrouping Worksheet

    You can work in excel with your worksheets individually or you can work with group. You can combine multiple worksheets into a group. If you make change to one worksheet that change will be applied to all worksheets in that group.

    How to Group Work sheets

    In our example we want to group mysheet1 and mySheet3 click on mySheet1 and press and hold ctrl the click on another sheet (mySheet3) and then release ctrl button and you will see that mySheet1 and mySheet3 are grouped.

    Now we will test the grouping we have just made when we try to add data to one worksheet that will added to another worksheet automatically. In image below we have added some data in few cells of mySheet1 that data should automatically added to mySheet3’s Cells.

    Now we select and see data of mySheet1 and then we will check if same data is also copied to mySheet3. But if you click any sheet that is already in group you cannot separately select that sheet, you have to select another sheet that is not in group then you can select any sheet separately you want.

    In figure below mySheet1 is selected and see the data of mySheet1 we added before.

    In figure bellow you can see mySheet3 is selected and you can see the data in this sheet is same as mySheet1 so now we have ungrouped these sheets. Any changes made to one sheet will not affect any other sheet.

    Ungroup all work sheets

    There is a proper way to ungroup worksheets that you have already grouped. Just right click on any sheet in group and a menu will appear then click on Ungroup Sheets all sheets will be ungrouped.
