Excel Tips Tutorial: VBA Visual Basic for Application For Beginners in Microsoft Excel

In this tutorial I will demonstrate some of the features of VBA.

As we all know, MS Excel is the most powerful application through which we can do our task in a couple of minutes than we can hope to wrap our tiny brains around.

Sometime you find yourself spending much more time in repetitive task or manual task in Excel which you seem as boring and time consuming. Surely, there must be a better way.

MS Office Products i.e Excel, Word and PowerPoint each of them has included the powerful programming language Visual Basic called VBA (Visual Basic for Application).

Recording a Macro

The Developer tab is not available, do the following to display it and Click the Microsoft Office Button , and then click Excel Options.

On the Developer tab, in the Code group, click Macro Security.

On the Developer tab, in the Code group, click Record Macro.

In the Macro name box, enter a name for the macro.

How to VBA in Excel

Note: The first character of the macro name must be a letter. Subsequent characters can be letters, numbers, or underscore characters. Spaces cannot be used in a macro name; an underscore character works well as a word separator. If you use a macro name that is also a cell reference, you may get an error message that the macro name is not valid.

Tip If you want a macro to be available whenever you use Excel, select Personal Macro Workbook. In the Description box, type a description of the macro.

Click OK to start recording.

Perform the actions that you want to record.

On the Developer tab, in the Code group, click Stop Recording .

Open Excel

Click on menu item Tools, Macro, Record New Macro

In the Record Macro box, type in the macro name, “Example1”. Click OK

How to VBA in Excel

You should now see a small toolbar labeled “Stop” with two buttons.

Click on cell B2

Type “Hello Excel” and push your Enter key

Highlight cell B2 again and change the font to bold by clicking the “B” button on the toolbar.

Stop recording your macro by clicking the first button, with a small blue square, on the toolbar which appeared when you started recording.

How to VBA in Excel

If you open the sheets having macros in it, the warning title bar is appeared asking Enable Macros or Disable Macros as appear in the below image.

How to VBA in Excel

Select Enable Macros.

Running a Macro

Now run your macro. First clear cell B2, then click on Tools, Macro, Macros. Click on Macro1 and click the Run button, or just double-click on the macro name.
