Excel 2013 Tutorial: How to Refer to a Named Cell as a Constant

In Excel you can name cells that contain text and treat the cell as a constant. For example, you could name a cell “Company_Name” and for every cell within your workbook where you need to insert the company’s name, you could instead simply refer to the "Company_Name" cell by entering =Company_Name and the result will always be whatever value is entered into the cell named Company_Name. This could be very useful if you plan on using your workbook as a template. Instead of having to manually change every cell that contains the company name, all that you have to do is change the content within the cell named “Company_Name” and all other cell that refer to that cell will change. Let’s do an example.

In the screenshot below you can see that I have a cell designated for the company’s name. I can name the cell and then refer to the cell with it's name in any cell where I want the company name to be displayed.

Cell Reference Constant text

First I need to define the name of the cell designated for the company name. I will do this by following the steps below.
  • Activate the cell that I want to name, cell B1 in my case.

  • Click on the Formula tab

  • In the Defined Names group double click the Define Name button. The New Name dialog box will appear.

  • In the Name box replace the content with what you want to name the cell. This will be Company_Name in our case.

  • In the Scope box select Workbook so that the name will be applied to the entire workbook.

  • In the Comments box enter any necessary comments

  • Leave the Refers to: box alone. The cell that this “New Name” refers to is already inserted since we activated the cell when we opened the New Name dialog box.

  • Click the OK button and your this cell will be known as Company_Name. If you enter =Company_Name in a cell within your workbook the result will always be that name that you have inserted into the “Company Name” cell.

  • In every cell that displays SubjectMoney Inc. I have actually referred to the Company_Name cell by entering =Company_Name. If I change the content within the Company_Name cell the company name will change in all cells that contain the formula =Company_Name. This is much more efficient than manually retyping the name or copying and pasting the company name in every cell.
Refer to a cell as a constant
