Excel 2013 Tutorial Creating and Opening Workbooks in Excel 2013

Each excel file is called workbook. Whenever you open new file in Excel it will automatically generate a New Workbook for you but you have choice to choose an empty workbook or a template.There are three ways to start working or creating a workbook one is by choosing empty template 2nd is by choosing predesigned and available template and 3rd method is to open an existing workbook.

How to Create a New Blank Workbooks

  1. If you just have opened MS Excel 2013 it will initially take you to a page where it will ask you to select a template, click on Blank Workbook.

  3. When you click on empty blank work book it will open an empty Workbook for you, now you can work with this workbooks as your desire.


How to open a pre-created workbook

If you have already a workbook and you want to open it in Excel 2013 you have to follow steps below.

  1. Click on File and you will be taken to the backstage view. Now click Open and you will see few options.

  3. There are 4 options, 1st option is Recent Workbooks, 2nd option is SkyDrive, 3rd option is Computer and last option is if you want to add another resource where your workbook is saved. When you click on Recent Workbooks it will show you some recently used workbooks. You can select anyone from those workbooks click anyone and it will be opened for you to work.

  1. I have selected a workbook I have recently used named “myPreCreatedWorkBook” when I click on it it will be opened for me to work. As you can see in figure bellow workbook has been opened.

  3. Another option is for you to select and open your file from SkyDrive. When you click on SkyDrive option a side portion will appear. And if have signed in your Microsoft account it will show your SkyDrive and Workbooks in SkyDrive if available and if you have not signed in your Microsoft account it will ask you to sign in with your Microsoft account in order to use SkyDrive App.

When you are signed in with your Microsoft account, your SkyDrive will show up and you can select any existing worksheet from SkyDrive.

  1. 3rd option is Computer, you can open any Excel Workbook that you have locally saved in computer. When you click on Computer option among 4 options you will see a portion on left will appear with few options like Current Folder, Recent Folders and brows you can select any option you want if you click on Browse a window will be opened.

    After clicking browse a window will appear to browse your required file locally from your computer.

    Now select any Excel file or Workbook you want to open and click Open, that file will be opened.

    How to pin a workbook

    If you are frequently working on same workbook and you don’t want to waste your time finding, browsing and opening that workbook again and again you can pin that workbook so you can easily access that workbook. To pin a workbook click on file and navigate to backstage view and click open in Recent Workbooks some recently opened documents or excel workbooks will appear, on the right next to each recent workbook there will be a pushpin sign or icon just click that icon on right next to document you want to pin.

    After you click that pushpin icon that document will always appear in Recent Workbooks until you again click that icon to unpin it.

    You also can pin folders or directories of your Computer so you don’t need to find it again and again from computer. To do so just go to File > Open and click Computer and some Recent Folders will Appear, to pin any folder from those folders click pushpin icon in right of that folder.

    After clicking pushpin icon that folder or directory will always appear in Recent Folders until you unpin it by clicking unpin icon on the right of that folder.

    How to use Template with new Workbook

    A Template in Excel is a pre-designed spreadsheet or Workbooks you can use to make your work easy and quicker. In all pre-designed templates there is custom formatting and predefined formulas for different purposes, so when you use these templates, you can save a lot of time and effort when doing a project. How to create a new Workbook using a Template
    1. Click on File Menu

    3. Then click New, you will find several pre-designed templates along with Blank Workbook.


    4. Select a Template to review it. When you select a template you will see a preview along with few additional information that how can you use this template.

      Note: You must have an Active internet connection in order to search and use these template, because MS Excel 2013 search for your required template from thousands of online templates and download them for you to work on.

      What is Compatibility Mode

      Sometimes you have to work with Workbooks created in Excel 2003 and Excel 2007, these Workbooks are open in Compatibility Mode in Excel 2013, and files opened in Compatibility Mode have some features disabled in Excel’s newer versions. It means you can only use those features those are found in that version of excel in which workbook has been created, for example if you are using a workbook created in Excel 2003, now you can only use those features of excel 2013 those were found in Excel 2003.

      In image below you can see a file or workbook of Excel 2003 opened in compatibility mode in excel 2013. It has disabled some features of Excel 2013 like Power View, Slicer, and Timeline.

      If you want to Eliminate Compatibility mode, you have to Convert it into newer version of excel that you have. If you are collaborating with those people who still use Excel’s older versions like 2003, it’s better to leave this file into Compatibility mode so that its format will not change.

      How to convert Excel file to Newer Version

      If you want to convert Excel’s older version file or workbook to newer version you have to follow steps below.
      1. Go to File and access backstage view, when you click File an info section will appear with some options like Compatibility mode, Protect Workbook, Inspect Workbook.

      3. You have to click on Convert to save your file as newer version of Excel. When you click Convert it will show you a dialogue box that will asking you if you really want to convert this file to newer version of Excel you currently have.

      5. Just Click OK, then an another dialogue box will open and says that file conversion has been completed successfully now to use all feature you have to close and reopen this Excel workbook. Do you want to close and reopen this workbook now?
