Excel For Noobs Tutorial: Recommended Charts in Excel 2013

In this tutorial I am going to create a chart by using the recommended charts feature which is new in Microsoft Excel 2013. With the recommended charts feature Excel basically analyzes the type of data you have selected and then finds the charts that would best fit.

Below you can see that I have a worksheet that contains a data table. The data table shows quarterly revenues broken down by age groups.

Excel 2013 tutorial recommended charts

To create a chart using the recommended charts feature in Excel 2013 follow the steps below.

Step 1: Select the entire range of cells. In our example you will be selecting the entire data table which is cell A3 through cell G7. In Excel 2013 a Quick Analysis box appears at the bottom right of a selected range of cells.

Step 2: Point your mouse over the quick analysis box in the bottom right of your selected cell range and a box will appear offering you many different recommended options. One of these options are recommended charts.

Step 3: Click on the charts tab in the options box and it will provide you with 5 recommended chart types and another button titled More Charts which if selected will prompt the Insert Charts dialog box to appear.

Step 4: Scroll over the different recommended charts and Excel will provide you with a preview of what the chart will look like if selected.

Step 5: Select the chart type that best fits and your chart will then be embedded on the drawing layer of your worksheet.

Now that your chart has been embedded into your worksheet you can now resize your chart, move your chart and make changes to the chart layout and chart formats.
