Excel For Noobs Tutorial: Embedded Charts and Chart Sheets
Charts are either embedded on a worksheet or displayed on a chart sheet. Usually when you create a chart it is embedded however it is very simple to move an embedded chart to a chart sheet.
Embedded Charts
Embedded charts float on an invisible drawing layer. The chart that we just created is an embedded chart. Embedded charts can be moved and resized. When resizing an embedded chart you are also able to change the proportion of the chart.
You are able to edit embedded charts by changing the chart type, formats, the chart layout, the location and more. To do this the embedded chart must be activated. To activate a chart you simply click on a blank area in the chart. Once the chart is activated the Chart Tools contextual tab will appear offering a Design ribbon and a Format ribbon which are available only for editing charts.
Every time you create a chart it starts out as an embedded chart. The only exception is when you create a chart by selecting a range of cells and pressing F11. When you create a chart using this method the chart is created on a chart sheet.
Chart Sheets
A chart sheet is a sheet designated for a chart. In a chart sheet you are able to make changes just as you are with embedded charts. To move an embedded chart to a chart sheet follow the steps below.
Step 1: Activate the embedded chart by clicking on it.
Step 2: In the Chart Tool contextual tab select Design.
Step 3: Click on the Move Chart button and the Move Chart dialog box will appear.
Step 4: Select the New Sheet radial button and replace the default sheet name with the name you want to assign to your chart. Click OK and your chart will now be located in its own chart sheet.
