Excel For Noobs Tutorial: Using Cell Styles to Format Cell

Excel also has cell styles which make it more efficient to style your Excel worksheet. What cell styles allow user to do is to apply predefined cell formats to a cell or a range of cells. Styles can consist of up to 6 different formatting attributes which are listed below.

  • Font
  • Number Format
  • Borders
  • Alignment
  • Patters
  • Protection

To add cell styles to a range of cells first select the range of cells you want to style, go to the Home tab and in the Styles group click on the Cell Styles button. A drop-down menu will appear offering you samples of different pre-formatted cell styles. As you scroll over the different styles you will notice that you get a live preview of how the styles will look if applied to your range of cells.

How to change cell styles in Excel

Look at the image below and you can see that we have applied many different cell styles to different parts of our Excel worksheet. We could have created the same look by formatting each cell individually but it would have been much less efficient that using the cell styles feature.

How to Modify a Cell Style

What makes Cell Styles so efficient is that you can change different formatting attributes of multiple cells and multiple ranges of cells in a workbook all at the same time. Suppose you have a large workbook full of worksheets which all contained many different tables. Now suppose that you used the Cell Styles feature to style all of these worksheets and you just realized that you needed to increase the font in many parts of the workbook. Instead of having to change each cell individually, you could just modify the font of the applied cell style and this would change the font for every cell where that style was applied. To modify and existing cell style follow the steps below.

Step 1: Click on the Cell Style button which is located in the Styles group in the Home tab.

Step 2: Right-click the cell style you are wanting to change and choose Modify from the list. The Modify dialog box will appear.

Step 3: Click on the Format button and the Format Cells dialog box will appear.

step 4: In the Format Cell dialog box activate the Font tab and make the changes necessary to the font. Here you can change many different font attributes. After you have made your changes, click OK and then click OK in the Styles dialog box. Now you have modified the Cell Style and all cells that it has been applied to.
