Excel For Noobs Tutorial: How to Pin and Unpin Excel Files to the Recent Files List

When you open Excel you will notice there is a list of Excel files titled “Recent.” Microsoft has created this list with the concept that files that have been opened recently are the most important files and therefore access is made easier. But, what if you haven’t opened an extremely important Excel file recently but you want access to that file to be as easy as the files in the recent list? To do this all you have to do is simply pin the file to the recent list and it will be listed no matter how long it has been since you opened the file.

How to pin files to the recent files list

  1. Open Excel
  2. Browse your computer and open the file that you want to pin to the recent list. This will put the file at the top of the recent list because you just opened it.

  3. Now close Excel and then reopen Excel.

  4. Locate your file in the recent list, scroll your mouse over it and you will notice that a button shaped like a pin will appear to the right of the file.

  5. Click on the pin and your file will now be pinned to the recent list no matter how long you go without opening the file.

You can pin as many Excel files to the recent list. This can be especially useful if you create new Excel files on a regular basis. For example, I write Excel tutorials daily and therefore I create new Excel files daily, however; some of these files are for test purposes only and are not important. I pin my most important files to the recent list so that they don’t lose ranking as I create new Excel files. If you want to unpin a file from the recent list all you have to do is click the pin button and the file will be unpinned.
