Excel For Noobs Tutorial: Excel Templates and How to Create a Workbook From a Template

In Microsoft Excel a template is a copy of a worksheet or model that is meant for others to use to insert their own data, formulas and numeric values. An example of a template would be a budget template where the accounts, formulas, titles and formatting are already made and the user must only enter their own data such as their income and expenses. Templates can also serve as a starting point or give ideas for one to create their own personalized Excel worksheet.

Microsoft Office offers you hundreds of templates to use such as budget templates, financial statement templates, invoice templates and more. The best way to learn all about Excel templates is to simply start exploring with them on your own.

To start searching templates in Excel 2013 go to the backstage view by click on File > New. Here you can open a new blank workbook, or you can browse and open Excel templates. In the New window you have many common templates that are immediately offered to you, you can scroll and browse through them until you find what you are looking for. If you can find the template you need then you can do a search that will search Excel templates on Office.com. Your search can be as broad or narrow as you want.

To create a workbook from a template, search for the type of template you are looking for and a list of many different templates will appear in the backstage view in the New window. Here you can scroll through numerous thumbnails of different templates until you find what you are looking for. If you would like to narrow your search even further, you can use the Filter By section on the right. Here you are able to filter your template search even further. For example, if I did a search for invoice templates, I could use the filter section to the right to filter by business invoices, sales invoices, package slips and more.

How to search for Excel templates in Excel 2013

After filtering your search, click on a template and a window will appear with a preview and a description of the template. Browse the templates until you find a match and then click the Create button to download and open a new workbook file with the template ready for you to use.

All templates are different but most are self explanatory. Some simply require you to enter data while others may require some customization such as changing generic titles and headers.
